Board of Directors
Perry Hand, chairman, has been with St. Andrew since its founding. He is President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman of the Board for Volkert, a global civil engineering firm. Previously Perry served as Alabama’s Highway Director from 1991-1993, Alabama’s Secretary of State from 1989 to 1991, and was elected to two terms in the Alabama Senate. You’ll find him most Sundays in the choir, not far from his wife Joan.
Paul A. Barefield, vice-chairman, is a native of Mobile. After 40 years of university teaching in Minnesota, Oklahoma and Louisiana, he moved to Fort Morgan in 2003 to a house that he and Catherine bought in 1968. In addition to his university teaching, Dr. Barefield worked extensively as a consultant in the United States, Europe and the Middle East. Paul and Catherine have three children and one grandson. Paul enjoys hunting, fishing, cooking, and singing.
Harriet Slaughter, secretary, says, “Whether I am singing in the choir, playing handbells, attending SAW functions, cooking casseroles, learning in my Sunday school class, or attending committee meetings, I am always blessed by the caring and kindness shown by so many of you. Joe and I enjoy seeing our grandchildren growing in their spiritual journey under the nurture and care of this congregation, and we are so very grateful to be part of this family!”
Mike Vaughn, treasurer, served as a CPA in Tennessee before moving to Gulf Shores with his wife Kathy. They are "living the dream," which for them means giving back through the Christian Service Center and St. Andrew by the Sea. Among their other joys is the arrival of their first grandchild.
Andy Haynes and his wife Patti recently retired from Tommy Bahama clothing, but retirement is merely a word, for they have trained as Stephen Ministers, and Andy coordinates the Frank Brown International Songwriters' Festival.
Susanna Lax, a retired teacher, enjoys photography, art, reading, and the Share the Beach program. She and her husband Orren have a son and a daughter, as well as three grandsons and three granddaughters. Susanna has chaired the Church Council and served on the Fellowship Committee. Currently she serves on the Music, Nurture, and Outreach Committees as well as taking part in the St. Andrew Women. Susanna loves St. Andrew's diversity and warmth.
Chance McLemore, a dentist in Foley, holds degrees from Auburn and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He and wife Carrie have two beautiful daughters, Kenley and Allison. Dr. McLemore has a great love for foreign mission work, ever since a mission trip to Russia in 2003. He also loves spending time with his family, playing sports, fishing, and helping St. Andrew to strengthen family ministries.
Julia Parks has worn many hats over the years, from serving as a nurse to owning The Little Gym in Fairhope. She's also a member of the choir and St. Andrew's wedding coordinator. She and her husband Bill enjoy an active circle of friends at Peninsula and beyond.
Anne Saunders accompanied her husband David as he served our country in Hawaii, Okinawa, the Philippines, and Panama. Now happily retired to Gulf Shores, they stay busy as ever. Longtime members of our church, they have inspired some of our most beloved events. Anne brings good spirits and laughter to the choir, the Music Committee, and St. Andrew Women.
Sue Vosloh, Church Council chairperson, gained a special appreciation for military families during her husband David’s Naval service. Together they support many good works in Foley. Sue’s heart is with spiritual growth, small groups, and caregiving efforts such as Stephen Ministry.
